The Goods

“The Flop Eared Mule”

Standard Pick Case — No. 1

Copperhead Brown

Materials

Made from Newbury Leather's Copperhead Tortoise leather — a warm brown full-grain chrome-tanned hide with natural variation and a heavy wax finish. The color ranges from red brown to dark brown depending on the particular hide. Great hand feel — nice and grippy for holding picks. Saddle-stitched with waxed Riza Tiger thread.

Design

Built around big, heavy flat-picks — Bluechip, Token, Tone Slab, Wegen, Golden Gate, real tortoiseshell — the triangle picks that cost real money and vanish the second you set them down. Eight of them slid into their own slots and stay put. The flap folds over a skived tongue and tucks closed — no snaps, no magnets, nothing metal to gouge a pick or instrument. About 3¼ inches square: slim enough for a gig-bag pocket, a jacket, or the accessory pouch of a hard case.

Construction

Cut from 4–5 oz full-grain leather and saddle-stitched entirely by hand — two needles, one stitch at a time. If a stitch ever gets nicked, the seam holds instead of unraveling the way machine stitching does. The tongue is skived down to make it easy to slide through the closure. Made in batches of 5 or so, after work, in my Chicago apartment. No two exactly alike.

Care

Newbury Tortoise is a low-maintenance leather that only gets better with handling. Wipe it down with a dry or barely-damp rag as needed — skip soap and harsh cleaners. As it ages you can work in some neutral leather conditioner like Venetian Leather Balm, but wait until it needs it. Avoid long soaks and direct heat, but this is a resilient leather and doesn't need to be babied. Expect the color to change and a patina with use.

“The Blackberry Blossom”

Standard Pick Case — No. 2

Black Chromexcel

Materials

Made from Horween Chromexcel Leather, drum-dyed black. Chromexcel is a storied leather favored by American boot makers for its durability and feel. Standard Chromexcel keeps a natural core, which is what gives it that pull-up effect — the color lightening wherever the leather is bent or stressed. This one is struck through: dyed all the way down, no lighter core underneath, so scuffs and scratches blend in instead of standing out. This leather grips and conforms to the picks, holding them secure. Saddle-stitched with waxed Riza Tiger thread.

Horween is one of the finest tanneries in the world, and just a couple miles straight south of my apartment in Chicago.

Care

Horween Chromexcel is a low-maintenance leather that gets better with handling. It's a heavily oiled and waxed leather, so when it's new it can "bloom" — a waxy haze that wipes right off. Wipe it down with a dry or barely-damp rag as needed — skip soap and harsh cleaners. As it ages you can work in some neutral leather conditioner like Venetian Leather Balm, but wait until it needs it.

Chromexcel is fairly soft, so it can dent relatively easily, but you'll find the dents and scratches rub out with little effort.

Avoid long soaks and direct heat, but this is a resilient leather and doesn't need to be babied.

“The Squirrel Hunter”

Special Pick Case — No. 3

Woodland & Blaze

Materials

A two-leather build for the picker who's just as at home in the forest as on a fretboard. The outside shell is La Bretagna's Small Print Camo — a fine Italian vegetable-tanned leather finished with a dappled green-and-brown pattern. The inside panels are Wickett & Craig English Bridle, a hand-finished American bridle leather in a warm blaze orange. Bridle leather is famously firm and long-lived — used for horse tack and gun belts built to outlast their owners. Saddle-stitched with waxed Riza Tiger thread.

Design

Built around big, heavy flat-picks — Bluechip, Token, Tone Slab, Wegen, Golden Gate, real tortoiseshell — the triangle picks that cost real money and vanish the second you set them down. Made in batches of 5 or so, after work, in my Chicago apartment. No two exactly alike.

Care

Both these leathers are vegetable tanned and will benefit from occasional conditioning with a light leather conditioner like Venetian Leather Balm or Bick 4, when the leather starts to feel dry. Wipe it down with a dry or barely-damp rag — skip soap and harsh cleaners. Vegetable-tanned leather water-spots more readily than chrome-tanned, so blot spills right away instead of letting them dry in. Keep it out of long soaks and direct heat. Expect the colors to deepen and a patina to build quite a bit with use — the blaze will mellow and warm as it goes.

It’s Just Me

Made by hand, in small runs of a few at a time. Slight variation from case to case is part of the fun. I have a full-time job and keep busy, so your patience with shipping and stock and communication is much appreciated.

A Picker's Folly case

Hi, I’m Benjamin.

I play mandolin and guitar and I've got a slew of serious triangle picks, and this is how I keep them straight.

Everything from the angle and curve of the pick slots to the weight and temper of the leather was specifically chosen to work with the chunky picks I love.

They're made with high quality leather that will get better with age, and saddle-stitched by hand. It's just me in my Chicago apartment after work. No two the same.

If you're interested in one, put in an order and say hello!
